How does the twin-chamber system actually work?
You load kitchen scraps and dry material like leaves or cardboard into one drum and give it a few turns each week. Rotating on the central axis mixes and aerates the contents while the ventilation slots let air in, and the sealed drum traps the heat the microbes generate. When one chamber is full you stop adding to it and start filling the second, leaving the first to cure into finished compost. That way a batch actually finishes instead of being topped up forever.
Is it hard to turn or set up?
Not at all. The drum rotates horizontally on a central axis mounted on a steel A-frame, so you just push it round a few times rather than lifting or forking anything. There's no bending to ground level and no heavy digging, which is why people with back trouble or limited mobility find it far easier than a traditional ground bin. A pair of gloves is included so you can add scraps without getting your hands messy.
How often do I need to turn it?
A few turns a couple of times a week is plenty. You add scraps as you generate them and give the drum a spin when you pass it, usually with your morning coffee in hand. The rotation replaces the hard work of turning a heap with a fork, so there's no set schedule to dread. Keeping the mix of green scraps and dry brown material roughly balanced helps it break down faster.
Will it keep rats and possums out?
That's one of the main reasons people choose a tumbler over an open heap. The drum is fully enclosed with two sliding access doors, and the whole thing sits raised off the ground on a steel A-frame.
