How does the Coredrill Compost Aerator actually aerate my compost?
It has folding steel wings near the tip. You push the tool straight down into the pile with the wings folded flat, so it goes in with little effort. On the way back up the wings open and grab the material, lifting the packed core and leaving an air channel behind. Repeat that in several spots and you feed oxygen right down into the middle, where a fork can never reach.
Is it hard on my back like turning the heap with a fork?
No, and that is the whole point. There is no lifting or flipping the pile. You stand upright, push the shaft straight down and pull it back up, using the tool's leverage instead of your spine. The shaft runs roughly 90 cm so you work standing rather than bent over. Most people say it feels nothing like wrestling a pitchfork through a slimy heap.
How often should I use it and how long does it take?
A few minutes of light work once a week is plenty during active composting, or whenever the pile smells or looks compacted. Aerating a full bin usually takes under three minutes, just a handful of plunges across the surface. It is quick enough to do with a coffee in hand on a Saturday morning, then walk away.
Will it work in an enclosed compost bin, not just an open heap?
Yes. It was designed exactly for the bins a fork cannot get into. Because the tool goes straight down and the wings open on the pull, it reaches the compacted core of a closed bin where a spade only slices the surface. It also works in an open backyard heap or a community garden pile. It handles turning, mixing layers and bringing finished compost up from the bottom.
How soon will the smell and slime clear up?
Once oxygen is getting into the core, most piles stop smelling within about a week. The anaerobic stink and slime come from a pile with no air in the middle, so the moment you break that up and let it breathe, it shifts from rotting to heating and breaking down. Keep aerating weekly and you will have crumbly dark compost far sooner than a pile left to sit.
What size is it and what is it made of?
The shaft is galvanised steel, roughly 90 cm long, with folding arms of about 15 cm near the tip that open on the pull. The galvanised finish resists rust so it holds up left out by the bin through the seasons. It suits a standard backyard compost bin or heap. For very shallow compost under about 200 mm deep there is not enough pile for the wings to grab.
